Individual Therapy

The first session

The first session involves gathering pertinent information so that I can best understand your current concerns. I will ask a series of questions so I can begin to understand relevant factors from your past. I will also ask about current factors that may be contributing to the problem. We will discuss what your goals are in attending therapy. I will then offer my summary and formulate a proposed course of treatment.

This process is collaborative and flexible; it is about ensuring we have a shared understanding of the issues that brought you to come see me so that I can offer the most targeted approach in treatment.

I am always guided by client preferences and characteristics. I also use specific outcome measures to assess therapy progress throughout the course of treatment. Everybody responds differently to therapy and people are often surprised by what “comes out”. I offer a safe and supportive environment to explore your concerns and I aim to help you:

  • Gain insight and understanding. Therapy is a gradual unfurling, It is a process
  • Take responsibility, or not! Sometimes people fail to understand the role they have played in maintaining a problem in their life, or why they may have been doing this. Conversely, sometimes people accept responsibility for an event or another person unjustly
  • Help you reach personal goals to enable a fulfilled, full life
  • Have better emotion regulation and the capacity to communicate about emotions
