Child Therapy

My name is Dr. Nicci Flanagan and you can read much more about me under the Therapist menu above. Especially with children and young people, prevention is better than cure. Psychological concerns experienced in childhood rarely go away if left untreated. 
As a child psychologist, I often work with parents and family systems. My goal is to help parents better understand what their child’s behaviours mean, and I work with the family to develop adaptive strategies to navigate their concerns. For younger children, the sessions are designed to be fun (i.e., learning through play) and I pace sessions in accordance with the way the child or young person presents.

Depending on the presentation, I will employ a range of techniques including CBT, mindfulness, coping skills (for example breathing and relaxation) and psychoeducation. During the first meeting, I will speak to the parents to gather relevant history. In the second meeting, I will meet with the parents and child, and then see the child alone (or with a parent present if they request). Subsequent sessions will be one-on-one. I will speak to the parents for the last 10 minutes of each session for younger children.
Ultimately, therapy can help to enhance a child’s social and emotional learning, improve their social skills, enhance their attachment style and confidence and teach them to better regulate emotions and make informed choices.
